The Heart of David Bible

Joseph Herrin (01-26-2017)

The Heart of David Bible is a name I arrived at many years ago, for I have been considering translating the Bible for a long time. It could possibly be called The Heart of David Study Bible, depending on how much study material I can set aside for it. There is much to commend David’s name to the work, but the labor I had in mind was his attitude toward aiding his son in building the Temple. To understand his diligent efforts let us look back to the Scriptures. The following Scripture contains David’s instructions to his son Solomon.

I Chronicles 28:10-21
Take heed now; for Yahweh has chosen you to build a house for the sanctuary: be strong, and do it. Then David gave to Solomon his son the pattern of the porch of the temple, and of the houses of it, and of the treasuries of it, and of the upper rooms of it, and of the inner chambers of it, and of the place of the mercy seat; and the pattern of all that he had by the Spirit, for the courts of the house of Yahweh, and for all the surrounding rooms, for the treasuries of the house of God, and for the treasuries of the dedicated things; also for the divisions of the priests and the Levites, and for all the work of the service of the house of Yahweh, and for all the vessels of service in the house of Yahweh; of gold by weight for the vessels of gold, for all vessels of every kind of service; of silver for all the vessels of silver by weight, for all vessels of every kind of service; by weight also for the lampstands of gold, and for the lamps of it, of gold, by weight for every lampstand and for the lamps of it; and for the lampstands of silver, silver by weight for every lampstand and for the lamps of it, according to the use of every lampstand; and the gold by weight for the tables of show bread, for every table; and silver for the tables of silver; and the forks, and the basins, and the cups, of pure gold; and for the golden bowls by weight for every bowl; and for the silver bowls by weight for every bowl; and for the altar of incense refined gold by weight; and gold for the pattern of the chariot, even the cherubim, that spread out their wings, and covered the ark of the covenant of Yahweh. All this, said David, have I been made to understand in writing from the hand of Yahweh, even all the works of this pattern. David said to Solomon his son, Be strong and of good courage, and do it: don't be afraid, nor be dismayed; for Yahweh God, even my God, is with you; he will not fail you, nor forsake you, until all the work for the service of the house of Yahweh is finished. Behold, there are the divisions of the priests and the Levites, for all the service of the house of God: and there shall be with you in all manner of work every willing man who has skill, for any manner of service: also the captains and all the people will be entirely at your command.

These words of David for the building of the Temple of Yahweh were given to him by the Lord. David added to the words of God all of his strength, and all of his might. He continued by saying the following.

I Chronicles 29:1-5
David the king said to all the assembly, Solomon my son, whom alone God has chosen, is yet young and tender, and the work is great; for the palace is not for man, but for Yahweh God. Now I have prepared with all my might for the house of my God the gold for the things of gold, and the silver for the things of silver, and the brass for the things of brass, the iron for the things of iron, and wood for the things of wood; onyx stones, and stones to be set, stones for inlaid work, and of various colors, and all manner of precious stones, and marble stones in abundance. In addition, because I have set my affection on the house of my God, seeing that I have a treasure of my own of gold and silver, I give it to the house of my God, over and above all that I have prepared for the holy house, even three thousand talents of gold, of the gold of Ophir, and seven thousand talents of refined silver, with which to overlay the walls of the houses; of gold for the things of gold, and of silver for the things of silver, and for all manner of work to be made by the hands of artificers... Therefore David blessed Yahweh before all the assembly; and David said, You are blessed, Yahweh, the God of Israel our father, forever and ever. Yours, Yahweh, is the greatness, the power, the glory, the victory, and the majesty: for all that is in the heavens and in the earth is yours. Yours is the kingdom, Yahweh, and you are exalted as head above all. Both riches and honor come of you, and you rule over all; and in your hand is power and might; and it is in your hand to make great, and to give strength to all. Now therefore, our God, we thank you, and praise your glorious name. But who am I, and what is my people, that we should be able to offer so willingly as this? For all things come of you, and of your own have we given you. For we are strangers before you, and foreigners, as all our fathers were: our days on the earth are as a shadow, and there is no abiding. Yahweh our God, all this store that we have prepared to build you a house for your holy name comes of your hand, and is all your own. I know also, my God, that you try the heart, and have pleasure in uprightness. As for me, in the uprightness of my heart I have willingly offered all these things: and now have I seen with joy your people, that are present here, offer willingly to you. Yahweh, the God of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Israel, our fathers, keep this forever in the imagination of the thoughts of the heart of your people, and prepare their heart to you; and give to Solomon my son a perfect heart, to keep your commandments, your testimonies, and your statutes, and to do all these things, and to build the palace, for which I have made provision.

These words of David showed where his heart had been in the latter years of his life. With all of his heart he had designed and made provision for the great Temple his son would build. It was to be a great task, chosen for a man who did not know bloodshed.

I Chronicles 22:5-16
David said, Solomon my son is young and tender, and the house that is to be built for Yahweh must be exceedingly magnificent, of fame and of glory throughout all countries: I will therefore make preparation for it. So David prepared abundantly before his death. Then he called for Solomon his son, and charged him to build a house for Yahweh, the God of Israel. David said to Solomon his son, As for me, it was in my heart to build a house to the name of Yahweh my God. But the word of Yahweh came to me, saying, You have shed blood abundantly, and have made great wars: you shall not build a house to my name, because you have shed much blood on the earth in my sight. Behold, a son shall be born to you, who shall be a man of rest; and I will give him rest from all his enemies round about; for his name shall be Solomon, and I will give peace and quietness to Israel in his days: he shall build a house for my name; and he shall be my son, and I will be his father; and I will establish the throne of his kingdom over Israel for ever. Now, my son, Yahweh be with you; and prosper you, and build the house of Yahweh your God, as he has spoken concerning you. May Yahweh give you discretion and understanding, and put you in charge of Israel; that so you may keep the law of Yahweh your God. Then shall you prosper, if you observe to do the statutes and the ordinances which Yahweh gave Moses concerning Israel. Be strong, and of good courage. Don't be afraid, neither be dismayed.  Now, behold, in my affliction I have prepared for the house of Yahweh one hundred thousand talents of gold, and one thousand thousand talents of silver, and of brass and iron without weight; for it is in abundance: timber also and stone have I prepared; and you may add to them. There are also workmen with you in abundance, cutters and workers of stone and timber, and all kinds of men who are skillful in every kind of work: of the gold, the silver, and the brass, and the iron, there is no number. Arise and be doing, and Yahweh be with you.

Many people read the account of Solomon building the Temple and they do not think of how he was aided by his father. They may remember only the following words which Yahweh spoke to David.

II Samuel 7:12-17
When your days are fulfilled, and you shall sleep with your fathers, I will set up your seed after you, who shall proceed out of your bowels, and I will establish his kingdom. He shall build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. I will be his father, and he shall be my son: if he commit iniquity, I will chasten him with the rod of men, and with the stripes of the children of men; but my loving kindness shall not depart from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I put away before you. Your house and your kingdom shall be made sure for ever before you: your throne shall be established forever. According to all these words, and according to all this vision, so did Nathan speak to David.

It may seem that Solomon was only a lad when he became king. In truth, he was 30 years old, and it was in the 4th year of his kingdom that he began to build the Temple. He labored on the Temple for 7 years. Many people think that Solomon was responsible for everything that was done in the Temple, but Yahweh gave the design to David. David also provided for the Temple with much gold and silver. Solomon did add to this gold and silver, as did the rest of the people, but David gave himself to the work.

When I think of this work by David I am mindful of the attitude that is befitting a man who gives himself to create a translation of the Scriptures. Many men have brought to the work of translating too much of that which carries forth the effort of superstition. They have erased the name of Yahweh from the book, and made many translations that are filled with error. David would not do so. He would forego all that detracts from the glory of Yah.

It is my hope that the Bible I translate would be free of error. As much as I have considered the error of the Bible, and have been made aware of the stumbling of other men, I am determined to do better. Of course, I have not been shown every error in the Scripture, but I do trust Yahweh that He will help me. My desire is to create a Heart of David Bible that will aid all those who yearn for truth.

  1. Yahweh is a Spirit (John 4:24). Creation naturally seeks its Creator. The desire to know ‘truth’ comes to us from the very Spirit of Yahweh within our created selves, whether we acknowledge Him or not. This desire to know ‘truth’, is nothing less than the longing in our hearts to know our Creator, who is also known as our Heavenly Father, whose name is Yahweh, and who IS Truth. The words by which He made Himself known to mankind in times past have been under the assault of Satan even from the moment those words, as scripture, were originally given. It is doubtful that any man knows the reasons why Yahweh allowed His words to Mankind to become corrupted through the ages. But it is certain that anyone who seeks Him and His truth with all of their heart, their mind, and their soul will receive the Truth that they seek. My belief is that Brother Herrin’s sincere desire to create this ‘Heart of David Bible’ will be rewarded with Truth, from Yahweh Himself. My prayers will be with you.
