As I was reading your report and your con...Joseph,
As I was reading your report and your conclusions, I felt that, if you change a few minor details, the very same process you describe is what has been happening in Argentina since Mr. and Mrs. Kirchner came to power. The populist ideas they came up with to get widespread support actually derive from one of the most popular presidents in our history, Mr. J. D. Perón. The system Mr. Perón created c. 1945 was one of poor people getting benefits from the state in exchange for basically nothing, and sadly created a mentality of NOT working to earn your living among the lower classes. The Kirchners came into power in 2003 when the country was devastated, and got millions of poor people on welfare (most of which still depend on that help and are chronically poor) in exchange for votes.
There are also parallels on the immigration issue. Here have immigrants from poorer Latin American countries who riot and get access to free or very cheap housing while one in three "porteños" (people from Buenos Aires, the capital and wealthiest city) have to pay rent because they can't afford to buy an apartment. Poor people who support the government get all kinds of benefits while the middle class gets heavily taxed to maintain people who, in many cases, don't want to work at all (or couldn't get a decent job because they haven't received a good education to begin with). Our government is one of the most corrupt ever and yet our president has a critical mass of of staunch supporters (I'd estimate it at around 30%) who hang on to every single word she says and basically adore her. You can't reason with fanatics because whenever you try to show them a few facts they automatically believe them to be fabrications from the opposing media. The only explanation I can find to why a third of my country (including professionals with university degrees who should know better) support Cristina K. in spite of the many blatant lies she has told us and the crisis we're currently in because of her incompetence, is that the father of lies has blinded these people. The ability of these people to deceive is supernatural. And it all leads to the same place... A world government emerging to "save" people to provide the elusive prosperity, peace and security.
May God give us eyes to see through the propaganda.
